Teams doing well at national titles

- BY DAVID BERRY

Victorian teams featuring Volleyball Horsham members have enjoyed a good start at 2018 National Junior Volleyball championships on the Gold Coast.

Laelah Robertson’s Vic Blue team started with a 3-0 smashing of NSW in a win that will certainly give the team confidence going forward.

Cleo Baker’s Vic Gold team has chalked up three wins and a narrow loss in its first four games to head the division.

The girls were good in beating NSW, Western Australia and South Australia, but would be kicking themselves for not beating Vic White, which they lost to 23-25, 25-17, 23-25. Competition is very even in this division and anything could happen, as was witnessed when NSW beat top team Queensland.

Will Saligari’s Vic Gold team has been good in defeating South Australia and NSW and certainly showed it can mix it with Queensland, going down in a close game.

Despite losing, those boys will take great heart out of the game and again great confidence going forward.

Lloyd Baker and Tuskan Mcalpine’s Vic Gold team has also started well, with wins over Vic White and South Australia, and will be confident going forward and figuring in medal matches.

Tamikah Dockrill’s Vic White team has suffered two losses to South Australia and Western Australia and will be looking to improve as the week progresses.

The standard of the competition has been high and all our players are certainly competing well in a pressure-cooker atmosphere.

They will all be better for the experience.

What they learn from this event they will bring back to the school and association teams, which all bodes well for the future of volleyball in Horsham and the Wimmera.
