Labor to help light up Ararat

Victorian Labor will literally shine more light on Ararat’s Alexandra Gardens if it retains government next month.

The State Government has announced a grant of more than $230,000 for floodlighting at the gardens to improve community safety and help reduce criminal activity in the area.

Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford joined Ararat Rural City Council representatives to announce the plan as part of a Public Safety Infrastructure Fund grants funding round.

“This new lighting will increase community safety and security in Alexandra Gardens, so more people can enjoy them more often,” she said.

“Through our record investment in community safety we’re giving Victoria Police the resources, equipment and technology they need to keep Victorians safe.”

The grant will fund the installation of new lighting at Alexandra Gardens and Ararat Active Link, including Bill Waterston Skate Park.

The project includes the installation of pole-mounted lights and lighting bollards in Alexandra Gardens and Ararat Active Link around the skate park and entrances.

The Ararat council is in charge of the project in partnership with Ararat Active8 health and wellbeing group and Victoria Police.

The government has already invested $430,000 in Ararat Active Link to upgrade the first stage of the skate park through its Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

This was in partnership with the Ararat council and Ararat Skate Park committee, which generated money through donations, fundraising and pledges from local businesses.

The latest commitment is part of the Labor government’s $25-million investment in its Community Crime Prevention Program.
