Relay hall of fame extension

-

Nominations for the Horsham and District Relay for Life Hall of Fame have been extended to January.

The committee had planned to induct new members at a dinner this month but will now do so at a function at the relay event in March.

The 2019 Horsham and District Relay for Life will be at Dock Lake Reserve on March 15 and 16.

The event raises money for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services.

The Horsham hall of fame, launched last year, celebrates the triumphs of the region’s Relay for Life participants throughout the past 19 years.

Horsham relay committee member Tami Lane encouraged people to nominate worthy applicants.

“We invite people to go to our Facebook page and follow the link to nominate friends, teammates or community members that they believe have gone above and beyond to support the Relay For Life cause,” she said.

Mrs Lane said the committee was pleased to see additional interest in the relay following this month’s Paint The Town Purple campaign.

The campaign involves businesses decorating their shop fronts with hues of purple in a creative fashion to raise awareness for Relay for Life.

Old Dadswell Town owners Max and Jenny Green won this year’s competition, receiving a $2900 advertising package courtesy of The Weekly Advertiser and MIXX FM.

The Greens created plenty of interest with their display on the Western Highway, which paid tribute to a family friend, Zane, a five-year-old boy battling terminal brain cancer.

Mr Green has first-hand knowledge of fighting cancer, having overcome bowel cancer.

Mrs Lane said the Greens put their heart and soul into the winning display.

“The reasoning behind them getting involved was one that touched the hearts of many,” she said.

“To create a display for young brain cancer patient Zane and to then plan an entire weekend of activities that he might have never been able to experience in what time he has left shows that it is about giving to others in their time of need.

“This is the spirit of relay, giving to those who need our help, not only financially but creating awareness of the research and services that Cancer Council Victoria provides to patients and their families during treatment.”

People can search Relay for Life – Horsham and Districts on Facebook for more information about the event.
