Haven upsets pennant ladder leader

-

Haven produced a stunning upset in Central Wimmera Tennis Association pennant competition, knocking off ladder-leader St Michaels at the weekend.

Both teams were undermanned and forced to play emergencies, with Edmund and Phillippa Bush coming into the Haven line-up and Dan Krane, Jason Przibilla and Tammy Taylor suiting up for St Michaels.

The emergencies were not just there to make up the numbers for Haven, with Edmund Bush teaming up with Bill Hartwich to defeat Przibilla and Bill Robertson 8-2 in the opening doubles section.

Phillippa Bush and Lucinda Bourchier also posted an 8-4 win against Taylor and Simone O’brien. The Bushes each won a singles rubber to give their side a six-sets-to-two advantage at the end of the singles section.

The Saints retained top spot on the ODGGHU GHVSLWH ORVLQJ WKHLU ¿UVW PDWFK for the season, and will look to rebound at the weekend when they take on Kalkee.

The Kees are fresh from an important win, downing Drung South 8-79 to 6-84 at the weekend.

Despite winning only one singles rubber, courtesy of Paula Weidermann’s 8-6 victory against Romi Miller, the Kees dominated the doubles sets, dropping only three for the day on the way to an 8-79 to 6-84 win.

The fact Drung South won more games despite losing on sets showed the evenness of the contest.

Horsham Lawn moved to within a win of St Michaels with an 11-96 to 3-61 win against Telangatuk East.

Despite losing the overall set count convincingly, Telangatuk East won two of its three for the day with ease.

Courtney Price and Grace Lutze were too good for Lawn’s Rachel Mckinnon and Luisa Boddi in an 8-1 doubles victory, and Price dominated her singles rubber against Mckinnon 8-0.

Telangatuk East will travel to take on Drung South in round eight at the weekend, while Lawn will play at Haven.
