Diverse, light-hearted showcase

-

Horsham Film Society will launch its 2019 program with a screening of Palestinian comedydrama Wajib at Horsham Centre Cinema on Monday night.

The award-winning film offers a taste of the society’s line-up this year – diverse and lighthearted.

Horsham Film Society president Janet Heard encouraged people to join the society and enjoy unique films from around the world.

“It’s one thing you can do on your own or with friends, and is a nice, comfortable activity,” she said.

“All the films we have chosen come with critical acclaim and have won prizes at film festivals.

“We try to keep it limited to films that have been released in the past two years.

“We always try to have a nice balance and I think we have done well this year with a variety of genres.”

Mrs Heard said the society tried to pick films that would satisfy its members. “We have had a lot of quite heavy films in the past, but members want to leave feeling good about themselves,” she said.

“We have picked some documentaries, but again, we try to keep them entertaining.”

This year’s schedule includes the films Wajib, Shoplifters, The Reports on Sarah and Saleem, Call Me by Your Name, Jirca, Aurore, Foxtrot, The Death of Stalin, Woman at War and I Am Not a Witch.

Mrs Heard said the society, which celebrates its 51st anniversary this year, maintained a membership of about 100.

The Horsham Film Society meets on the last Monday of every month at 7.30pm, with drinks and food for members.

Mrs Heard said people interested in joining the society could contact her by calling 0419 570 273 or searching for Horsham Film Society on Facebook.
