Bowlers Hong Kong bound
Horsham bowlers Sophie Martin and Bevan Brooke will represent Australia at the Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships in Hong Kong in July.
The tournament, in its 20th year, is Asia’s premier junior bowling event and features some of the rising stars of the sport.
It will be Martin’s second time representing Australia this year after competing at World Bowling Junior Championships in March.
Both Martin and Brooke were selected after recording outstanding results at three recent national-level competitions.
Both bowlers travelled to Melbourne to compete at Tenpin Bowling Australia Australian Junior Championship, followed by the President’s Junior Interstate Shield and the Australian Junior Masters.
Martin ranked fourth in the junior female open section across all events at the Australian Junior Championship, while Brooke was sixth in the junior male open section.
Martin finished first in singles, fourth in doubles and first in the junior female five-person team.
Brooke placed 22nd in singles, second in doubles, first in mixed doubles and second in a classic five-man team section.
Martin and Brooke then formed part of a Victorian team that claimed its third consecutive overall title at the President’s Shield.
Martin helped the Victorian girls’ team to finish first and Brooke was part of the boys’ team that finished second.
Brooke was also named in the All Star team at the conclusion of the tournament with an average of 204.2.
Martin just missed All Star team selection in the girls’ section.
Martin qualified in second position at the Masters, a head-tohead knockout tournament.
She reached the fourth round, equivalent to the quarter-finals, before bowing out to eventual champion Grace Fahey.
Brooke was ranked 28th entering the tournament and was bested in the third round by Josh Keen-copland.
