Club steps into new gym program

-

Natimuk and District Gymnastic Club has started its first ‘Step into Gym’ program.

Classes are coached by Drew Fraser and provide a bridge between the club’s kindergym and after-school programs.

Fraser, who also coaches kindergym, said the new program gives little gymnasts the opportunity to ‘take their gymnastics to the next level’ before reaching school age.

“I would say it is the missing link between kindergym and our after-school program,” she said.

“Some of the children in kindergym who are still not at an age to do after-school classes would say, ‘what’s next?’

“And we also had others who found the jump between the two programs quite difficult.”

Fraser, returning to the club after four years at university, said the new program would teach basic gymnastic skills and unlike kindergym, does not require parent participation.

“The children will learn how to perform skills safely and correctly, how to get on and off equipment and learn shapes, while parents sit in the viewing area,” she said.

“We already have good numbers and my first class went really well, so I see it as something that will keep going.”

Club president Amanda Carracher said adult gym classes would also return to the club.

“It has been four or five years since we have run adult gym,” she said.

“They are recreational classes to learn fitness, strength and gymnastics skills in a fun, social environment, and all abilities are welcome.

“We’re trying to expand the club and give people more opportunity, because we have the facilities to use.”

The Step into Gym program runs on Monday and Thursday from 11.30am to 12.30pm.

Adult gym runs every Monday from 6.30pm to 8pm.
