Mo-growing for a cause

- BY COLIN MACGILLIVRAY

People across the Wimmera might have noticed a surge in the number of men with fuzzy growths on their top lips in the past few weeks.

For the month of November, many men are putting away their razors and letting their moustaches grow in support of the Movember charity – myself included.

Movember aims to ‘change the face of men’s health’ by raising awareness and money to combat three significant health challenges faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.

People taking part in Movember seek sponsorship for their mo-growing efforts, with money raised going towards one of the three nominated causes.

For my part, I have chosen to support men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

Mental health has been something I have struggled with at times and I have seen the devastating impact suicide has had on family and friendship groups.

I am extremely fortunate to have a great support network I can rely on when I am struggling, but not all men have this.

Men are generally less likely than women to seek and receive support for a mental-health issue and are more likely to die by suicide.

Any contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference and while my fundraising efforts might not amount to much, with so many mos across the region beginning to flourish it all adds up.

If anyone would like to support my Movember campaign, they can visit my fundraising webpage at https://mobro.co/colinmac gillivray?mc=1 and click ‘donate to Colin’.
