Friends sell flowers for charity

-

A group of Horsham friends has continued a Mother’s Day tradition, selling about 250 bunches of flowers to raise money for oncology services.

Enid King said she and a group of ladies had been growing, bunching and selling flowers for charity for about five years.

“We started doing it to raise money for a Relay for Life team and when the Rachel’s Wish campaign started to raise $1-million for a Wimmera cancer centre, we started raising money for that,” she said.

“It’s not through any group or organisation, it’s just a group of ladies who enjoy getting together to help a charity.

“We didn’t think we would do it this Mother’s Day because of the way things are with the coronavirus, but people were still keen to do it.”

Mrs King said the group only decided to continue the tradition a week before Mother’s Day.

“We usually promote it, but we ran out of time,” she said.

“We ended up selling a lot of the bunches online, through Horsham Buy, Swap and Sell, and also through the Bennett Road shop.

“We would like to thank everyone who bought the flowers for Mother’s Day.

“We really appreciate continued support. the

“Without it, we wouldn’t be able to keep doing what we’ve been doing.”

Mrs King said the group was thrilled with this year’s total, raising $1355 for Wimmera Cancer Centre.

“We usually have quite a few people helping because there is a lot of work involved,” she said.

“We have a little roster of people who help pick, bunch and sell the flowers. We only had about seven people this year though.

“Everybody enjoys doing and it’s lovely company.

“I say we will probably do it again next year.” it
