Golf back in the swing
The first step in easing some of Victoria’s COVID-19 restrictions has opened the door for Horsham Golf Club men’s championship leader Nick Thomson to resume his tilt at this year’s title.
Restriction changes allows for people to resume playing golf and a Horsham championship remains firmly on Thomson’s mind.
Thomson led the field by six shots ahead of Brent Mcintyre after three championship rounds and one to play when COVID-19 restrictions shut down sport in March.
He has since been trying to maintain some semblance of form by hitting balls against a sheet hanging from his home pergola for the past six weeks.
He said he had been hoping for an easing of restrictions before this week’s announcement.
“It’s been a weird feeling. I’ve been keen to play any form of golf instead of just hitting balls in the back yard,” he said.
Horsham Golf Club has wasted little time and reopened its course, under strict conditions, and has developed a package for prospective new members.
Club acting manager Janene Coutts said the course was open to the public and members from today.
“We are very excited and relieved and looking forward to welcoming many new members – people who have not been members before such as footballers, netballers or anyone who thinks they would like to have a go at golf in these trying times,” she said.
The club is offering new introductory 12-month, $50-a-month memberships that provide players an opportunity to play golf seven days a week. The club’s driving range is also open.
Playing golf involves fitting in with State of Emergency guidelines and people keen to play at the Horsham course must book by calling 5382 3312.
“Our phones have already been running hot with people ringing to put their names down to play,” Ms Coutts said.
“While we’ve been given the official green light there are changes to conditions to ensure we keep everyone safe and well and to operate within government guidelines.”
Details are available from the club.
