Motorsport club secures location

Drivers of a motorway track project in the Wimmera have secured nearly 70 acres of land to fulfill their proposal.

The plan involves a 1.8-kilometre asphalt circuit with a skid pan to cater for drifters, Supermoto, off-street drag racing, sprints, offstreet burnouts, circuit racing for a variety of cars and motorbikes, and defensive driver courses.

The newly formed Horsham Motorsport Raceway Club will meet at Wimmera Business Centre in Horsham on Wednesday next week from 6pm to discuss progress and form a committee.

The club’s Patrick Willmore said a Horsham district farmer had offered land for the endeavour.

“We’re looking at a long-term lease and are still working on the finer details,” he said.

“I have driven around the land and it is suitable for what we need.” Mr Willmore said the next step was getting people involved. “We know the interest is there, now we need people from all types of motorsports to jump on board for the next stage,” he said.

Former Horsham resident and 4Site Design Group Bendigo director Haydn Morrell, a civil engineer, had offered his expertise throughout the planning process.

“Our team has knowledge on town planning and the type of preliminary work that needs to be done for a project like this,” Mr Morrell said.

“I think it’s a worthwhile thing to help with. I like race cars and it will be good to have something closer to home – there’s not a lot of options in central Victoria.

“We will have to meet with the local council, show some preliminary plans – there’s a fair bit of work to do before the club even starts thinking about funding and getting it off the ground.”

Mr Morrell said the facility could cater for a range of motorsports.

“There’s pretty much nothing from The Bend in Tailem Bend to Melbourne, but there’s a big enough need,” he said.
