Ballinger to build on bigger picture

- BY ABBY WALTER

Angela Ballinger is ready to ‘sink her teeth’ into her role as AFL Wimmera Mallee regional manager.

Mrs Ballinger said she was excited to start in the new ‘strategic’ position on September 19.

“I know the role has been vacant for some time, but the clubs and leagues need this level of support,” she said.

“I see how important community sport is and after the many interruptions we have had, you can see the value it has on people’s lives.

“You spend time with friends, families and teammates throughout the week and during the weekend – it’s embedded in our way of life.”

Mrs Ballinger has been in an executive role with Wimmera Football Netball League for 17 years and has volunteered in community football and netball for more than 30 years.

She is deputy chair of the Wimmera Football Netball League board, from which she will resign on September 18 following the grand final.

“There are not many positions in a club or league that I haven’t done,” Mrs Ballinger said.

“I have loved community sport all my life and now a volunteering role has evolved to a fulltime position.”

The regional manager was previously Jason Muldoon, who, after nine years with AFL Wimmera Mallee, transitioned to AFL Goldfields and AFL Western District regional manager in March 2022.

“Jason has left huge shoes to fill. I hope I can fill them over my time in this position,” Mrs Ballinger said.

“Since changing roles, Jason has been a phone call away for any support we have needed and I look forward to being a colleague of his.”

Currently an operational role, from October 31 the regional manager will take on an oversight and strategic position.

“Currently the regional officer conducts operations for the leagues and employs staff,” Mrs Ballinger said.

“The individual leagues – Horsham District and Wimmera – will take over their own operations at the end of October and be required to employ staff and find a building.

“My role as regional manager will become big picture and look at oversight and strategic management.

“It will be about the sustainability and value of community sport in our area.”

The AFL Wimmera Mallee regional manager role is a full-time ongoing position.

Mrs Ballinger said she was looking forward to using the offseason as a chance to engage with clubs and stakeholders.

“There’s a tonne of work to do, but I want time to analyse what is done well and what needs to be done now and in the future, to improve football and netball in the region” she said.

“It won’t be without its challenges, but I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into the role over the coming years.”
