Try these five experience­s in Sydney’s annual festival of indie performanc­e

01 FESTIVAL VILLAGE SYDNEY

Fringe is making Erskinevil­le its home this year, with pop-up performanc­es along the main drag, comedy at Hive Bar, artists at PACT, and dance at the Anglican church. Centre of the Festival Village is Erskinevil­le Town Hall ( 104 Erskinevil­le Rd) , site of a 1920s-style Speakeasy Lounge and the Festival Bar. There will also be theatre shows most nights, and Late Night Library events on Sep 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29.

02 COMEDY AT GIANT DWARF

Fringe Comedy is happening at other venues too but if you are yet to attend Sydney’s hub for alt comedy you should check out their fringe offerings including the 25th Annual Spelling Bee, special editions of Comedy(ish), Erotic Fan Fiction and First Tuesday Comedy Club, and shows by Anne Edmonds and Eddie Sharp. 199 Cleveland St, Redfern 2016. giantdwarf.com.au.

Highlights include Bruce, by Perth-based Weeping Spoon Production­s; Moondance, a new dance-theatre work by De Quincey Co; and Katie Shearer’s performanc­e of British writer Charlotte Josephine’s acclaimed one-woman play Bitch Boxer.

Wes Carr is doing a tribute to George Harrison’s songbook; actor and singer Ursula Yovich ( Love and Informatio­n) is delivering blues and soul; and Young Henrys Small World Festival is putting PVT, DZ Deathrays, the Church, PALMS and more ( Sat Sep 19, Sydney Park). Sydney Fringe and Redfern Community Centre are teaming up for this mini-fest of Indigenous music, art-making, market stalls and food trucks.
