Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun spent 12 years developing their myth-steeped animation, where spirit girl/dolphin Chun develops ties to a human boy/fish. The hand-drawn/CG images prove transporting, the magical spirits wondrous, but sensory immersion takes precedence over narrative sense. ‘Spirited Away at sea’ is about the bedazzling, befuddling measure of it.
