Oscar-winning short filmmaker Anders Walter makes his feature debut with this adap of Joe Kelly’s acclaimed comic, a monstrous melodrama centred on a troubled teen (Madison Wolfe) who hunts giants while coming to terms with undisclosed traumas. Wolfe is terrific as the abrasive giantslayer, but A Monster Calls covered near-identical ground with a far more potent mix of magic and real-world emotion.
