Five more alternative Jekyll and Hyde movies…
The NuTTy Professor 1963, 1996
In both versions of this comedy spin on the J&H concept, a mild-mannered nerdy scientist concocts a potion to turn himself into charismatic alter-ego Buddy Love. Jerry Lewis loses his protruding teeth, while Eddie Murphy slims down and ditches the fatsuit.
The Mask 1994
Also based on a comic, this bizarre early Jim Carrey vehicle sees the rubber-faced joker don an, erm, rubber face to play a bank clerk who becomes a sharp-suited cartoon-come-to-life trickster when he finds an enchanted Loki mask. His dog also takes it for a spin at one point.
Fight Club 1999
The definitive angsty male drama of the ’90s saw Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden enter the public consciousness as a Mr. Hyde for a new era. As well as the enviable abs and leather jacket, Durden sticks it to the man (and his consumerist ideals) in ways you can only dream of.
Hulk 2003
Perhaps the best-known comic character to have a Hyde side, Bruce Banner’s not-so-jolly green giant comes out whenever he gets angry, although he does develop a degree of control. Ang Lee’s overly ambitious psychodrama take on the Hulk remains a singular curio.
Black Swan 2010
In order to get in touch with the central role of Swan Lake, ballet dancer Nina (Natalie Portman) unearths her hitherto repressed dark side in search of the performance. A trippy meditation on the cost of artistic perfection, and the sense of self you can lose/find in the process. MM
