Awidower’s suspicions of an affair between his late wife and a local man become a dangerous obsession in this gripping Icelandic noir. Unfolding over long, leisurely takes, Hlynur Pálmason’s film twists a simple story into bold new shapes. Before the inevitable third-act showdown, it also wrings blackly funny returns from a remote counselling session and a terse exchange that descends into slapstick violence. Oscillating between tampeddown grief and righteous anger, lead Ingvar Sigurðsson brilliantly anchors the weirdness. Chris Schilling
