The year before his revered Tokyo Story, Yasujiro Ozu made this lesser-known but equally insightful and charming family drama. It charts the falling-out of a middleaged couple after their niece refuses an arranged marriage and exposes the fault lines in their own relationship. Shot in Ozu’s customary static, low-slung camera style, it’s deceptively simple in its delicacy and empathy, but also a satiric portrait of generational shift as post-war Japanese society switches from kabuki to baseball.
