A HAUNTING HIT

-

Of all the iconic moments featured in Ghost, perhaps the most enduring is Sam and Molly’s slippery and sensual pottery scene, soundtracked by The Righteous Brothers’ 1965 version of ‘Unchained Melody’ (a cover of a 1955 song). “One of the producers came in one day and said, ‘What do you think of this song for the jukebox love scene?’ We listened to it and it was just spookily perfect,” laughs Zucker. “It was almost like it’d been written specifically for this movie, in both the music and lyrics. ‘I’ve hungered for your touch’ – it’s amazing.” Not that he would’ve predicted just how universally it would be embraced. “I certainly didn’t think it was going to become a big deal.” Goldwyn blames near-constant reruns for the track’s extended lifespan. “I would say a month does not go by where someone doesn’t come up to me and say, ‘Oh, I was watching last night on TV’ – it’s just always on,” he says. “Certain iconic things from the film have always stuck. The whole pottery scene has become part of pop-culture. The revival of ‘Unchained Melody’ stuck over the years too and it always reminds you of whenever you hear it in the elevator.”
