Set in 1650s Shropshire, Thomas Clay’s febrile period piece sees the isolated farm inhabited by Charles Dance’s stern Puritan and submissive wife Maxine Peake invaded by an initially naked couple of free-thinking radicals (Freddie Fox and Tanya Reynolds). Graphic violence, ideological conflict and hallucinogenic sex orgies ensue to both exhilarating and perplexing effect, aided by an authentically-realised single location and a sweeping score composed by the director himself using Civil War-era instruments.
