Tie-ins that really sing…
I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
Spectacularly spoilery clips from The Bodyguard mixed with Whitney conjuring said scenes in some sort of abandoned theatre/holodeck. More dramatic than being shot at by a member of Spandau Ballet when you’ve just won an Oscar.
GANGSTA’S PARADISE
“I wanted some low-riders and some shit in it,” griped an initially hesitant Coolio; what he got – as per director Antoine Fuqua’s concept – was Dangerous Minds star Michelle Pfeiffer listening intently to the MTV-award-winning rap.
YOU COULD BE MINE
It’s T2.1, as the Arnie-nator takes a break from targeting Connors and goes after Guns N’ Roses instead, obliviously thrashing away at a sweaty gig. The (anti-)climax sees the T-800 deciding not to “waste ammo” on Axl and the boys.
INDEPENDENT WOMEN, PT. 1
Destiny’s Child attend ‘Charlie’s Angels Boot Camp’, taking lessons from the 2000 film. They pay little heed to Cameron Diaz’s dance-fighting, make swift work of a gimp-suited goon and finally pose amid a blaze of Burger King-sized flames.
TAKE MY BREATH AWAY
The planes may be grounded in this boneyard-set vid, but the emotions reach asphyxiating altitude as Top Gun’s Cruise/ McGillis wordlessly fight ‘n’ flirt. Berlin’s Terri Nunn’s performance (almost) distracts from the state of her overalls.
NOTHING’S GONNA STOP US NOW
Band Starship fully embrace their assignment, re-enacting scenes from beloved wrongcom Mannequin… by playing mannequins! The postmodern hijinks peak with a cameo from film-stealing window dresser Hollywood (Meshach Taylor).
EYE OF THE TIGER
The Rocky saga’s greatest hit comes with a suitably punchy promo, as the band Survivor strut the neon streets with the grim purpose of men on their way to a midnight screening of The Warriors. No Mr. T, but there’s a billowing foil curtain that’s just as ’80s-tastic.
(EVERYTHING I DO) I DO IT FOR YOU
More Costner, fewer spoilers, lots of heartfelt strumming. The scene changes from day to night to day again, a metaphor for how long Bryan Adams’ Prince Of Thieves anthem spent at number one.
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH…
‘Mystery’ back-up singers Douglas, Turner and DeVito, miming and air-punching in perfect (give or take) harmony. Despite famously misheard lyrics, Billy Ocean’s song is better than the film it’s from, The Jewel Of The Nile.
KISS
Ever the maverick, Prince’s soundtrack promo has not a frame of footage from the film (Under The Cherry Moon) while focusing heavily on its star (himself). The setup resembles Karate Kid II’s ‘Glory Of Love’ (honourable mention alert), but with more near-nudity. ML
