It’s absolutely enormous,” Mark Gatiss told the Radio Times of the seventh Mission: Impossible movie, which marks the Brit’s debut in the franchise, in an unspecified role. “It’s like Bond – in fact, it’s bigger than Bond. The scale is unbelievable.”

“Epic” is how returning writer/producer/director Christopher McQuarrie describes it, and judging from the jaw-plunging trailer and the stunt featurette of IMF superspy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) riding a motorcycle off a cliff, he is, if anything, talking it down. Expect callbacks that ricochet all the way to Brian De Palma’s first Mission movie (hello, action on a speeding train! Oh hi, Henry Czerny!), and all manner of secrets emerging from Hunt’s past as McQuarrie continues to dig into a character who really started off as a vessel.

With Covid delays and the release of Top Gun: Maverick to take into account, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One’s date with cinemas has been pushed back several times, but the excitement remains at fever pitch. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part Two will then follow a year later, with rumours swirling that the gigantic two-parter will act as a grand send-off for Cruise’s Hunt.

McQuarrie, who’s directing both instalments after knocking it out of the park on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, is refusing to be drawn. Talking to the Light The Fuse podcast, he pointed out he’s been standing by Cruise’s side for 15 years now while stories about the World’s Biggest Movie Star have been printed, and “none of what they say is actually true.”
