BRIE LARSON, CHARLIZE THERON, MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ ETA 19 MAY

Let’s crunch some numbers: a reported budget of $340m makes the 10th Fast & Furious movie the fourth most expensive film in history.

Given the F&F series is now essentially a superhero franchise – to say nothing of the fact it went into space in F9 – fans have mooted some out-there theories as to what, exactly, that wad of cash will buy. Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) sent back in time is one theory; dinosaurs crashing the action is another. The bonkers thing is, you can’t really discount either.

While the plot is top secret, we do know that FX is the first instalment of a two-part franchise finale, and that the F&F family’s famous faces will be joined by newbies Captain Marvel and Aquaman, aka Brie Larson and Jason Momoa.

“He’s very sadistic and androgynous and he’s a bit of a peacock,” Momoa has growled of his villain, Dante. “He’s got a lot of issues… He’s definitely got some daddy issues.” Well, it’s always about family with this franchise… Talking of which, Rita Moreno will be playing Dom’s granny. Could she end up facing off against franchise stalwart Helen Mirren? The new cast members aren’t the only boost the film has had: it seems set to be the first instalment to utilise electric cars, with an electric Dodge Charger spied on set.

All has not been harmonious within the Fast family: director Justin Lin exited over creative differences a week into the shoot (but maintained writer and producer credits), replaced by Louis Leterrier, who has form with both speeding vehicles (the first two Transporter movies) and family (er, Grimsby). Franchise stalwart Michelle Rodriguez promises, “He takes it places it hasn’t been before…” So, dinos and time-travel, then?
