Jazz

(1978)

-

For a band well practiced in musical experimentation, Jazz was almost too much for some. Mercury aping a muezzin’s call to prayer ushers in opener Mustapha and its proximity to Fat Bottomed Girls, with its colossal drop-D riff, grubby lyrics and barely-concealed schoolboy innuendo, still raises an ironic smile. There are some truly lovely songs here that rarely receive attention, such as In Only Seven

Days and the aching Leaving Home Ain’t Easy, while May fearlessly shreds in F# for the bombastic Dead On Time, one of the band’s heaviest offerings. Although the album also includes the timeless Don’t Stop Me Now, it’s the little-known Jealousy, all heartbreaking harmonies and subtle sitar, that we’d urge Queen newbies to devour.
