Most rounded rumps, and no butts about it

- SAMANTHA HEALY

HE MAY be the butt of many jokes, but Julia Creek local Calem Fegan has a trophy to prove his derierre is one of Australia’s best.

Mr Fegan, and fellow Julia Creek resident Karla Sollitt, both 18, were crowned the winners of the Best Butt competit- ion during the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival on the weekend.

The duo competed against denim- clad backsides from all over Australia, with 60 men and 60 women vying for the title.

The competition, which has been hotly contested since becoming a feature of the festival in 2004, requires contenders to wear jeans and get their booties shaking in front of a 3000 strong crowd.

Mr Fegan and Miss Sollitt said entering the competition was an unofficial rite of passage for many 18year- olds across northwest Queensland.

Mr Fegan said the competition was an opportunity for redemption. “My mate said ‘ you look ugly, your muscles are small, but you know what, you’ve got a good butt, you should try it,’ so I decided to run with option three and ignore the rest,” said Mr Fegan.

“There are some trade secrets that helped me win tonight – what you won’t learn at school is that you’ve got to get down low and move from side to side, swing the hips.

“The mates are going to take the mickey out of me but, you know, it’s just because they’re jealous.

“I can see their inner feelings and I know what they’re thinking and they really want this trophy.”

Miss Sollitt said the Australia’s Best Butt Competition had also been fiercely contested by her family over the years.

“It’s a little bit unreal to finally be old enough to enter Australia’s Best Butt and win it,” she said.

“We have a little bit of a family competition with Best Butt. Every year we have someone win it or come close to winning it, so I’m excited to finally be part of that.

“It could come down to genetics – big butts look good in jeans.”
