AN IMPRESSIVE hat- trick from attacking midfielder Sam Herlihy and a Joe Thornton double helped the Fury to a stunning 6- 0 win over the South West Queensland Thunder on Saturday night.

A two- week break between games seemed to do the Fury the world of good as they bounced back from a disap- pointing loss in their home opener to score an emphatic victory at the Townsville Sports Reserve.

Herlihy handed the home side a dream start when he found the back of the net twice in the opening fifteen minutes, with Perry next on the score sheet as his neat finish made it 3- 0.

A penalty to Joe Thornton saw the hosts take a healthy four- goal lead into half time, and second- half strikes from Herlihy and Thornton rounded out the Fury’s third win of the 2015 season.

Fury head coach Ian Ferguson had plenty to smile about during his side’s comprehensive victory and was delighted the team rediscovered their winning ways.

“I thought the boys played really well in patches and there were other times I thought we played pretty poorly,” he said.

“But we coped with any pressure they put on us and I’ve got to be happy with a 6- 0 win at home.”

The Fury now hold a 3- 3 record after the first six rounds of the Queensland NPL season, with the side hoping to move up the ladder when they host Brisbane City at the Sports Reserve on Saturday night.

“Getting the first win at home today should give the boys a little bit of confidence heading into our next game against Brisbane City,’’ Ferguson said.

Saturday’s heavy loss continued a run of poor form for the Thunder, who have now conceded 11 goals in their last two NPL outings.

“We have to find a way to cut out individual errors, and until we do that it’s going to continue to hurt,” Thunder coach Chris Wilkes said. NORTHERN FURY FC 6 ( S Herlihy 3’ 13’ 54’, Jake Perry 19’, Joe Thornton 25’ 48’) def SWQ THUNDER FC 0
