Garbutt cool spot to grow
AIRCONDITIONING is a cool line of business with plenty of work on offer in North Queensland.
Just ask Andrew Munro of A- Mech Services, whose family business is expanding in an otherwise difficult and tight construction market.
The company, which employs 12 people and has been going about 15 years, has just taken a two- year lease on larger premises at 38 Hugh Ryan Drive, Garbutt.
A- Mech Services previously operated at Hamill Street just around the corner, but the move is making all the difference for the company as it prepares to make major investments in the extra machinery it needs to service its niche in providing ducted airconditioning.
The company is about to acquire another plasma cutter at a cost of about $ 100,000.
“We are going really well,” Mr Munro said. “I think commercial construction is solid in Townsville and always is.
“We’ve got some big projects on at the moment.”
The company has work at the RAAF Base, Lavarack Barracks and in shopping centre upgrades at Fairfield and North Ward.
Mr Munro said there were good prospects for more big commercial jobs coming up at Fairfield, North Shore and at James Cook University.
The company benefited from providing fairly specialised services in airconditioning mechanical services, the manufacture of sheet metal ducting as well as plasma cutting and general fabrication.
They supplied to the wider North Queensland market including Mackay, Cairns and Mount Isa.
“We’ve always been pretty busy,” Mr Munro said.
“The market we are strong for our work.”
It seems even construction

is companies which quote for services in airconditioning mechanical end up running with A- Mech Services anyway because of the nature of the work.

Colliers commercial and industrial executive Shaun McLaren said the new premises for A- Mech Services should be well suited for their expansion and he encouraged other business operators to contact him if they, too, needed more space.
Mr McLaren said adjoining properties at 36 and 40 Hugh Ryan Drive, each comprising about 570sq m of warehouse and office space, were also available for lease.
“It is another positive sign for Townsville that some businesses are needing to expand in the current market,” Mr McLaren said.
“There are quite a lot of good quality warehouses available that would suit a range of tenants.”
