Pods on the move

MOST of us want or need to lose weight, but when it comes to jumping into one of those fancy space- age- looking Hypoxi pods, you would think the blokes might baulk at that.

Not so, according to Townsville Hypoxi operator Rebecca Kent, who is preparing to import more of the machines into the city to expand her business.

“The demand for the service has surpassed my expecta- tions,” Ms Kent said. “It’s not just the women, it’s the men who like it.

“Everyone is so much more aware of their wellbeing and looking after themselves.

“That’s where Hypoxi ticks the box.”

The machines were developed by Austrian sports scientist Dr Norbert Egger about 15 years ago and are now popping up in regional centres around Queensland.

They use “vacuum therapy”, applying pressure to parts of the body to stimulate circulation, while, at the same time, clients exercise on the machine’s bicycle- like mechanism.

Ms Kent said the result was a relatively gentle fat- burning exercise.

She said it was particularly suited to people recovering from injuries or older people who might not be able to undertake the heavier physical activity.

It was also good dreaded beer belly.

Ms Kent opened the city’s first Hypoxi studio at her Belgian Gardens home in 2013 and is now graduating to her first commercial premises at 85 Bundock St.

Sales and leasing agent at Ray White Commercial Townsville Troy Townsend said the property, formerly home to the GP Super Clinic, continued to attract health- related businesses.

1300SMILES operates its Belgian Gardens dental practice at the centre and there is also a Max Fit health and fitness outlet.

Ms Townsend said another 469sq m of commercial space was available in the complex which could used in one line or split into tenancies from about 150sq m. Leasing rates were about $ 300/ sq m.

Ms Kent said Hypoxi would move in their new site of about 100sq m next week.

The business has been operating on the lower floor of her highset home.

Ms Kent said starting from a home studio had been beneficial in reducing costs and helping the business establish but it was now time to move.

“It’s time to have a bigger space,” Ms Kent said.

“I am looking at expanding and getting some more machines.”

Judging by demand for the service, it will be a healthy move.
