An oasis of green grass

THOSE looking for grass, water and “a nice herd” of cattle will have their prayers answered this week when the 23,450ha grazing property of Gunnadoo goes to auction in Townsville.

The property is being marketed jointly by Slaney & Co and Elders Charters Towers, who are expecting a good turnout for the auction at Jupiters Hotel and Casino from 11am tomorrow.

“The place has plenty of grass, water and a nice herd of cattle,” Slaney’s principal Henry Slaney said.

“We are hoping for a good turnout. There’s been good inquiry and very good interest.”

Meanwhile, Elders took the 312ha “lifestyle” property of Purnawilla near Woodstock to auction in Townsville last week.

Lorin Bishop, of Elders, said discussions were continuing with parties after it was passed in at auction for $ 1.225 million.

Four bidders registered, with bidding starting from $ 600,000.

Gunnadoo, about 200km southeast of Charters Towers, is considered a proven breed- ing and finishing property with a reputation for producing quality heavy cattle.

Its good cover of grass will be the envy of many in an industry suffering from a suc- cession of failed wet seasons and the searing heat of the past summer.

Gunnadoo is owned by Eric and Kate Webb, of Emerald, and previously owned by the Kelso family, after whom the Townsville suburb was named.

The property comprises 19600ha of pastoral holding rolling lease and a Burdekin Dam Flood Margin Licence Agreement over 3850ha.

It has well distributed stock water supply with the Suttor River and Burdekin Falls Dam frontage providing 25km of permanent water.

Gunnadoo is being offered with about 2500 head of cattle.

The station complex includes a lowset, split- level, four- bedroom homestead, smaller three- bedroom staff house and outbuildings including a machinery shed, hay shed and several storage sheds.

In other offerings, Geaneys will auction the 15,154ha property of Liontown from 10.30am on May 8 at the Charters Towers Sovereign Tavern.
