Frogs skip away to early lead against Brothers

- ISIS SYMES

MEN’S A- grade Frogs are undefeated and proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the Townsville Castle Hill Touch competition this season.

Eight rounds in, Frogs sit comfortably on 24 points at the top of the ladder after defeating Brothers 8- 5 at the weekend.

The team was up 4- 1 at half- time, edging to a 6- 1 lead early in the second half.

But Brothers turned the game around late in the match scoring three consecutive tries, bringing the scoreline to 8- 5.

Frogs coach Rhys Bevan said it was his team’s ability to hold the ball and better handle the hot conditions that ensured the win.

“They ( Brothers) showed ill discipline at times and had three players force- subbed,” Bevan said. “We had Josh Brack score a hat- trick and he kept the opposition’s players Josh Hogan and Joel Craperi – who have been setting up a few tries each game this season – under wraps,” he said.

Bevan, who coached his side to the grand final last year, said he was blown away by his team’s start to the season.

“We lost to Redskins in the grand final last year by one touchdown,” Bevan said.

“Unfortunately, we were outplayed on the day and Redskins deserved their victory.

“This year we are the youngest team in the comp, with our oldest player being 23 and six players under the age of 18,” he said.

Frogs will face Crocs on Sunday who are yet to win a match this season.

“It will be an extremely difficult game,” Bevan said.

“They have some sharp players and a lot of experience. Jason Norford would be the form player in the league at the moment and they have two fierce competitors in Ben Davies and Zac Stevens who don’t give an inch.”

In the other men’s match, Redskins beat Crocs 6- 4 while Sharks had a bye. In the women’s, Frogs beat Brothers 4- 0, Crocs defeated Rum Runners 8- 6 and Redskins thumped Sharks 6- 2.
