Op shop role is Vinnies worker’s strong suit
Selection wears well
LYN Danvers is the backbone of St Vincent De Paul in Bowen and has worked tirelessly – seven days a week – to help the town’s op- shop become a place people from all over the North come to visit.
Ms Danvers has been nominated for a Community Spirit Medal, sponsored by the Nine Network Queensland, which recognises those whose selfless actions have enriched the lives of those in their community.
The Bowen retiree said she initially joined the charity group one day a week but had since taken over the co- ordination of the local charity store and more than 30 volunteers.
“I find this nomination amazing,” Ms Danvers said.
“I was working full time and when I retired I decided I wanted to give back to the community, and St Vincent De Paul is a very good organisation. Of course, it is all about the team of ladies but I would accept this on behalf of all of them.”
Ms Danvers said she joined Vinnies nine years ago and took over the co- ordination of the shop almost four years ago.
“We finetuned the shop and it’s now one of the best opshops in the North,” she said.
“People come from Proserpine and all over just to come shopping here.”
The Pride of Australia campaign has awarded more than 550 medals and shared more than 19,000 stories of hope, inspiration, courage and triumph over adversity.
Nominations are now open and close on July 19.
Categories include Child of Courage, Outstanding Bravery, Inspiration, Fair Go, Heroism, Courage, Young Leader, Environment, Care and Compassion, Community Spirit.
The finalists for each category will be announced on August 30.
