Family fun ruined by car attack

- CHRIS MCMAHON

A GROUP of youths punched and kicked at a car stopped at a red light – almost leading to a crash – in a shocking incident outside the Townsville Showgrounds on Sunday night.

Video footage of the attack has emerged on social media showing the group chasing down a car, which was stopped at the intersection of Woolcock St and Kings Rd, seemingly trying to pull a passenger out of the vehicle. The driver sped through the red light as the youths punched and kicked the vehicle, almost smashing into another car.

Townsville Police Inspector Mark Jackson said officers were investigating the incident, which was believed to have started after a fight between five teens and two men.

“Two males involved were able to get into a vehicle and leave the scene but were required to stop at a red light a short distance away,” Insp Jackson said.

“On doing so, the group of youths descended on the car ... the footage shows a number of youths kicking the vehicle several times and also appear to attempt to assault the driver through the window. It is concerning such an incident could take place outside what is essentially a family festival. There were families with kids in the area who were no doubt alarmed. This is not the sort of thing they should have to see.”
