Star’s visit gives Ford fan a real rev- up

- RACHEL RILEY

CANCER patient Martin Higginson has had a run of bad luck with his health but the Ford fanatic managed to put on a brave smile after getting a visit from V8 Supercars driver Scott Pye.

Mr Higginson, from Mackay, is receiving treatment at Townsville Hospital and said he had friends coming up for the three- day race event his weekend.

But, as he is too sick to attend, Mr Higginson’s doctors organised a surprise visit to bring a bit of the track to the ward.

“I have always liked Ford. They drive better and are built better, and I was a bit flabbergasted to get a visit from their drivers,” Mr Higginson said. “It makes being in hospital a bit easier and my friends are very j ealous.

“The V8s are a great thing and they bring a lot of money and tourism to the place. So, it’s really good.”

Pye, who drives for DJR Team Penske, said he was glad a little thing like signing an autograph meant so much to fans.

“I heard Martin’s story and he sounded like such a determined guy and I jumped at the chance to meet him,” he said.

“There are plenty of people that love our sport, and wherever they are they might not be able to make it to races so any time an opportunity comes up for us to meet them is fantastic.”
