Townsville Bulletin

Labour and union united

-

WHY would it come as any surprise to the Bulletin that Coralie O’Rourke received financial assistance from a trade union to seek election to the Queensland Parliament? This red herring gets trotted out every so often as if there is something sinister about it.

The Labor Party is the political arm of the union movement – always has been and always will be.

If my memory serves me correctly the decision to seek Parliamentary representation was taken at a meeting in Charters Towers and led to the election of the first democratic socialist government in the world. It is therefore entirely appropriate that union funds be used to support Labor candidates at all levels. Perhaps you might divulge the source of funds available to LNP candidates at the same election.

KEN MCELLIGOTT,

Townsville.
