Look who’s dropped in for the 400

- VICTORIA NUGENT

IT LOOKS like a blue police box, it’s bigger on the inside and it’s a surprise attraction at this year’s Townsville 400.

Doctor Who fans have been taking the opportunity to get their photos snapped with a replica of the TARDIS, the time machine made famous in the science fiction TV series.

The unusual attraction has been made by Townsville Men’s Shed members for an arts festival later this year.

The sTARDISS, named such to avoid copyright problems, will be part of Animating Space – Nocturne on September 19, where poets, singers, magicians and other artists will emerge from it for five- minute performances.

After the festival, the Townsville Men’s Shed will hire the box as a fundraiser for the group.

Shed member Darren Hilder said the big blue box had taken 10 weeks to make.

“It flat packs and pulls apart, so that was the harder part,” he said. “It really is bigger on the inside. You can take the back off and then be in your lounge room.”
