A TOWNSVILLE man was killed in a horrific crash near Mackay on Thursday, leaving behind his partner and a baby boy who miraculously survived the fatal accident.

Keyaston Wacando, 45, his partner, 21, and their eightmonth- old son were travelling on the Bruce Highway when their vehicle left the road and rolled into a ditch at Mount Ossa, North Mackay.

It is believed the crash occurred about 5pm and police are calling for any witnesses to come forward. Mr Wacando, who lived in Railway Estate, died at the scene. His partner and son were taken to Mackay Hospital with non- life threatening injuries. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

Mr Wacando’s mother Katherine Wacando said her family was shocked by the tragedy. “We never expected anything like this to happen,” Mrs Wacando said.

Mr Wacando is also the cousin of former Palm Island mayor, Delina Oui. The family rallied together in Townsville last night before heading to Mackay today.

Meanwhile, the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter flew an 18year- old woman to Townsville Hospital with multiple injuries after a vehicle rollover near Proserpine early yesterday.

The woman had sustained a fractured pelvis and femur, internal injuries, multiple lacerations and an eye injury. She was flown from Proserpine Hospital about 8.30am.

The Queensland road toll last night stood at 126, compared to 108 at the same time last year. The Northern Region road toll stands at 32, 11 more than this time last year.
