Hor­ror crash kills man

A TOWNSVILLE man was killed in a hor­rific crash near Mackay on Thurs­day, leav­ing be­hind his part­ner and a baby boy who mirac­u­lously sur­vived the fa­tal ac­ci­dent.

Keyas­ton Wa­cando, 45, his part­ner, 21, and their eight­month- old son were trav­el­ling on the Bruce High­way when their ve­hi­cle left the road and rolled into a ditch at Mount Ossa, North Mackay.

It is be­lieved the crash oc­curred about 5pm and po­lice are call­ing for any wit­nesses to come for­ward. Mr Wa­cando, who lived in Rail­way Es­tate, died at the scene. His part­ner and son were taken to Mackay Hos­pi­tal with non- life threat­en­ing in­juries. The Foren­sic Crash Unit is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cause of the crash.

Mr Wa­cando’s mother Kather­ine Wa­cando said her fam­ily was shocked by the tragedy. “We never ex­pected any­thing like this to hap­pen,” Mrs Wa­cando said.

Mr Wa­cando is also the cousin of for­mer Palm Is­land mayor, Delina Oui. The fam­ily ral­lied to­gether in Townsville last night be­fore head­ing to Mackay to­day.

Mean­while, the RACQ CQ Res­cue he­li­copter flew an 18year- old woman to Townsville Hos­pi­tal with mul­ti­ple in­juries af­ter a ve­hi­cle rollover near Proser­pine early yesterday.

The woman had sus­tained a frac­tured pelvis and fe­mur, in­ter­nal in­juries, mul­ti­ple lac­er­a­tions and an eye in­jury. She was flown from Proser­pine Hos­pi­tal about 8.30am.

The Queens­land road toll last night stood at 126, com­pared to 108 at the same time last year. The North­ern Re­gion road toll stands at 32, 11 more than this time last year.
