Curra, Lions in battle to make top four

-

THE prize of a much needed victory will drive the Curra Swans and Townsville City Lions in their clash at Muldoon Oval today.

Both endured comprehensive losses to the Thuringowa Bulldogs and Hermit Park Tigers respectively last weekend, managing just one goal between them in a cumulative 200 minutes of football.

Military exercises have decimated teams for the past few weeks of Townsville AFL, and the Swans and Lions have suffered more than most.

There is no time for either side to dwell on past results though, with just seven regular rounds remaining until finals and both teams battling to squeeze into the top four.

“We made it hard on ourselves not getting that win over the University Hawks a few weeks back, but there’s still a few games to go, so who knows,” Lions coach Andy Pethybridge said.

“We still just have to make do with what we’ve got, but every game is tough.

“There are some things I usually do that I simply won’t be able to do this game, but we have guys playing to make the most of their opportunities.”

The Lions and Curra have clashed twice already this year with the teams sharing an even split, although Townsville City won the most recent encounter with an eight- point victory.

Thuringowa host University at Tony Ireland Stadium in today’s other clash, with the Hawks coming off a bye.
