CONFIDENT BURDEKIN EYE FINALS

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

BURDEKIN have remained in the hunt for finals action in the Townsville City Netball Association premier league after beating Neptunes 42- 30 during a thrilling round of games.

The Burdekin are now in equal fourth sport with Runaways and Phoenix, who both dropped their fixtures to Marian- Vixens and Saints respectively on Monday night.

Burdekin trailed Neptunes by five goals during the first quarter, but slowly turned it around thanks to strong games from defenders Jacklyn and Shelby Norris, and a composed all- round team performance.

“Jacklyn and Shelby were absolutely fantastic for us, and they helped us get up to about 15 intercepts, and we stayed patient down the court when we got those turnovers and converted them into points,” Burdekin captain Cara Trindle said.

“We went into the game with the mindset that we could definitely beat them, because last time we led them but let it slip.

“We started off a bit slow but we always knew we would get it together.”

Burdekin’s latest win might have been the most important of their season, not only in terms of where it puts them on the ladder but also the dividends it provided in terms of confidence.

“We’ve got the belief we can make it,” Trindle said.

“We definitely think we have the team to play finals.”

Saints maintained an outright lead on the competition ladder thanks to their 53- 34 win over Phoenix, and MarianVixens scored their 13th win of the year after downing Runaways 53- 39.
