VETERANS PREPARE FOR TABLE TENNIS TITLES

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THEY have plenty in the way of experience, and their competitive instincts remain as sharp as ever.

Townsville’s Max Wellington and Mick Wright, along with Ann Sellwood and Melissa Vick, will form part of a 26- strong Townsville team that will compete against the state’s best at this year’s Queensland Veterans Table Tennis Tournament starting today.

More than 150 competitors will take part in the four- day event, which will run morning until late as organisers cram together what will be one of Townsville’s largest table tennis events.

Wellington, the 2013 veteran player of year, is a strong favourite to take out the Over- 50 years division, and Wright is a bronze medal winner in the Over- 70s.

Sellwood is a dominant force at home, having won five of the past six Townsville Championships, while Vick is playing to win another state championship.

“The quality of the table tennis is going to be terrific,” Townsville Table Tennis head coach Gary Walmsley said.

“We’re just finalising the centre and we have a record number of entires, so it’s going to be flat- out here and it’s the biggest table tennis event in Queensland for the year.

“Townsville will start as favourites in the Over 50, 60 and 70s men’s team events, and we’ll also be favourites in the Over- 50 women’s competition.”

Games run today from 11am at the Townsville Table Tennis centre, Charters Towers Rd, until Monday.
