Petition seeks vital roadworks
HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition calling for an upgrade to Herveys Range Rd.
The petition, launched by Alice River’s Steven Titmus, calls for the road to be resurfaced, widened and to have bike lanes added, as well as an upgrade to the Granitevale Rd intersection.
Thuringowa MP Aaron Harper, who has helped collect signatures, said the stretch of road was a major concern raised by residents during the state election campaign.
“As we know, the Mount Margaret development is going ahead in leaps and bounds which means there are a lot more people using this stretch of road,” he said. “It is also a cycling route, but it is narrow and completely unsafe.”
Mr Harper said he would table the petition in parliament and had spoken to Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey.
Bicycle Users Group president Rebecca Ryan said the route was used by groups of 30 or more riders on weekends.
“It is one of only three major routes that we use as cyclists, however, it’s not my favourite route as I am a bit intimidated by the narrow sections on the road,” she said.
“I know of several cyclists who have had near misses on this route. It doesn’t take much.”
