Burdekin fire up

- MICHAEL THOMPSON michael. thompson@ news. com. au

BURDEKIN have maintained their run to finals in the Townsville City Netball Association premier league with a 35- 27 win over Phoenix.

Defence dominated Monday night’s low- scoring game, with numerous turnovers costing both teams chances.

But Burdekin gun defenders Jacklyn and Shelby Norris again stood tall to force some of Phoenix’s turnovers, with experienced wing attack Kathryn Sartori feeding the ball superbly to fill- in goal attack Krystel Watego.

Burdekin captain Cara Trindle, who was rested from Monday’s game with a back strain, said the contest was still played at a high tempo despite the low scoreline.

“There was plenty of intensity because both teams wanted to stay in that fourth spot,” she said.

“So it was treated as a mustwin game, and it was great to get the result in the end.

“The Norris sisters were again amazing for us and I think our patience really helped us.”

Burdekin have now won their last two games and surged into finals contention after experiencing a run of losses earlier in the season.

Saints still lead the competition after scoring a 49- 13 win over Highland- Tigers, and Marian- Vixens follow closely after downing Neptunes 52- 30.

Burdekin, Runaways and Phoenix are all jostling for the fourth and last spot for finals netball, which is only weeks away.

“We certainly hope we can keep this form going,” said, Trindle, who is expected to return to action next week.

“We have a tough game next weekend against Marian-Vixens and hopefully we can be competitive and stick with them.” Townsville City Netball — Round 19 Saints 49 def Highland- Tigers 39; Burdekin 35 def Phoenix 27; Marian-Vixens 52 d Neptunes 30.
