Multipurpose arena needed

-

WELL said Bill Wood, ( Letter 18/ 02) regarding the proposed stadium.

Why build a limited purpose facility? Surely a multipurpose sporting arena would be more appropriate, given that there are other sports besides rugby league in North Queensland.

Cricket, the round ball sport, what about hockey and why not include athletics?

Also the idea of a retract- able roof would certainly make such an asset invaluable and would surely put Townsville well on the map as an international standard sporting venue and music concert centre.

Just because we are in a regional area surely does not preclude forward thinking.

Small- mindedness and ‘ local’ restraints hold back progress in such matters as developing infrastructure – the water situation is a case in point. Is this a case of “Build it and they will come”?

Perhaps, but surely due diligence and feasibility studies would have revealed the numerous other purposes for such a facility.

Are the decision makers only interested in the Cowboys and pop concerts? What a shameful misuse of government money if this is the case. A BRIDGEMAN, Charters Towers.
