A male bull arab cross ( right) was brought to the RSPCA with injuries which appeared to have been “home treated.” The dog’s owner is not known. Some of the dog’s larger puncture wounds had been stapled and become infected. After being treated, the dog made a full recovery and was rehomed. THE RSPCA is receiving more than three complaints every day about shocking animal cruelty in Townsville.

The animal welfare organisati­on recorded 1344 animal cruelty complaints in 2016 in the city in 2016, with up to 250 reports so far this year.

From maggots buried beneath overgrown fur, underweigh­t animals and broken legs, domestic animals were subjected to a wide range of shocking acts of cruelty.

More than 151 animals were seized by RSPCA inspectors in 2016, which includes animals voluntaril­y surrendere­d as part of investigat­ion.

While that total had only increased by nine cases since 2015, local experts say one animal subjected to any form of A male mixed breed dog ( pictured with RSPCA inspector Frank Bebernitz), estimated to be about five years old, was brought to the RSPCA with a “heavy tick load.” The dog was removed from its Rosslea residence yesterday after it was found to be a subject of a suspected breach of the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001. Attempts to contact the owner were unsuccessf­ul. cruelty is one too many.

“The main cases we see are untreated conditions like very heavy ticks, animals that aren’t groomed often enough with really thick fur and in some cases you might find maggots underneath their fur,” Townsville RSPCA inspector Frank Bebernitz said.

Mr Bebernitz said the RSPCA could not comment on several of the more severe cases as many were the subject of court proceeding­s.

“There was a case where a lady went through court because she failed to feed her horse,” he said. “We ended up having to euthanise it.
