Taumalolo reflects pride

-

JASON Taumalolo’s 10- year deal initially took us by surprise because it’s something that has never been done before in rugby league. I’ve known him for a fair while now and am extremely happy for him and how far he has come.

I think the 10- year deal is great for Jason and the club. He came over here as a 13- year- old from New Zealand and the sacrifices his family would have made to follow him over here would have been massive.

I first met Jason when I was 16 back in high school while he was at Kirwan High. We then came through the twenties system together and debuted in the same year in the NRL.

It’s great to see the loyalty he’s shown to become a Cowboy for life, especially the way the game is these days with so many guys chopping and changing.

This isn’t the first time he’s been off contract with a lot of interest outside of the club, so the commitment he’s made is admirable.

I think he’s developed into a smart footballer, he’s not someone who just runs hard and makes metres. He’s skilful and he does a lot of work that goes unnoticed as well.

When I first met him he was a bit quieter and shy than what he is now, but that comes with maturing and growing up and he’s certainly done that.

He was always a big kid, too, he played the same way as he does now. He’s matured a lot, not just as a player but as a person and he’s become a leader within our club.

It’s been a crazy start to our year in terms of injuries. I don’t think I’ve seen it this extreme so early in a season, but that certainly won’t be any excuse before tomorrow night’s clash on the Gold Coast.

It’s great to see the loyalty he’s ( Taumalolo) shown to become a Cowboy for life, especially the way the game is these days with so many guys chopping and changing. MICHAEL MORGAN

We were poor in a number of areas against Manly last week and as a team we were extremely disappointed, especially losing at home the way we did. Gideon GelaMosby ( below) gets an opportunity this weekend with Justin being out. We all saw what he is capable of in the Nines and I’m sure he’s excited to get a taste of NRL.

Hopefully, we are back home on Sunday after a good win on the Gold Coast.
