JT: Leadership is in Taumalolo’s future

HE’S a weapon on the field but it’s his improving professionalism off it which has Cowboys star Johnathan Thurston optimistic Jason Taumalolo could be the next “JT” to lead the club.

Taumalolo’s 10- year deal has divided opinion, but Thurston believes he is capable of developing into a Cowboys captain.

The 23- year- old is due to return from a two- week suspension for a shoulder charge against South Sydney at 1300SMILES Stadium on Friday night, setting up a blockbuster lock duel with Sam Burgess.

Asked if he’s capable of replacing him as the face of the club, Thurston said: “Yeah, he’s certainly got the potential to do that.

“He’s still maturing and we all know what he can do on the field, but he’s starting to learn what it takes mentally to prepare for games and looking after his body.

“Off the field, no doubt he can certainly be the face of the club.”

Thurston could retire at the end of next season, but it’s understood fellow cocaptain Matt Scott will resign for two more years.

It means the captaincy isn’t a responsibility Taumalolo will have to worry about for now, but Thurston be- lieves he can warm to the role.

“I think it’s in him but he’s still got a lot of growing to do, and is starting to understand his leadership role in the team,” Thurston said.

“We all know what he can do and the club can build a team around him. We’ve got a lot of good youngsters coming through, it’s an exciting time.”

the time his deal expires at the end of 2027, but Thurston backed the Kiwi international to see out the full contract.

We’re seeing those types of players ( like Corey Parker and Paul Gallen) still playing their best footy at that stage,” Thurston said.

“Certainly he’s got it in him to be one of the best forwards going at that age.”

The Cowboys’ current in- jury woes could ultimately benefit them at the end of the year with several youngsters gaining valuable NRL experience.

Winger Gideon GelaMosby scored on debut in Saturday’s 32- 26 win on the Gold Coast, while fellow backs Kalyn Ponga and Javid Bowen are going from strength to strength.

“It’s unfortunate the injuries we’re going through, but it gives kids an opportunity to understand what it takes to win games and play at a high level,” Thurston said.

“That’s what we need, for the next generation to come through. ( Many players have) played 60- 80 games for the club now, they’re leaders in their own right.”
