COWBOYS front-rower Matt Scott has joined Jason Taumalolo in committing to the club for life after agreeing to terms on a new twoyear deal.

The retention of the cocaptain, which will ensure he retires as a one- club legend, is another major coup for the Cowboys after they locked up Taumalolo for the next decade last week.

It is also reward for loyalty for a one of the Cowboys longest- serving players, who has played 233 games since he debuted two weeks shy of his 19th birthday in 2004.

The Cowboys insisted all along the season- ending anterior cruciate ligament injury Scott suffered against the Broncos in Round 2 wouldn’t affect his dream of finishing at the club where he began.

Coach Paul Green declared they would “do the right thing by Thumper” and they’ve been true to their word.

The show of faith is a reward for his loyalty and contribution to the club, on and off the field.

It is understood Scott signed his new contract until the end of the 2019 season yesterday, and the club will make it official today.

Scott attracted strong interest from the Newcastle Knights, but it is believed the 31- year- old had already decided to recommit to the Cowboys before they announced publicly they would no longer pursue him.

The fans will be overjoyed they won’t have to watch the club legend in other colours, as he has been part of the furniture since he was a teen.

The Longreach product was signed by the Cowboys when still in Year 12 at St Brendan’s College in Yeppoon and has gone on to become one of the greatest Queensland and Australia forwards of all time.

He has played 22 State of Origins for Queensland and 22 Test matches for his country, was named Dally M prop of the year in 2011 and won the Paul Bowman Medal as Cowboys player of the year in 2011 and 2013.

Scott is just one of five players in the Cowboys 200game club, joining Bowman, Matt Bowen, Aaron Payne and fellow co- captain Johnathan Thurston.

Bar Thurston, who played his first 29 NRL games with Canterbury before becoming the face of the Cowboys, all played their entire careers in Townsville.

Scott’s signing adds to a number of quality forwards the Cowboys have already locked up until 2019, including Taumalolo, Melbourne Storm signing Jordan McLean and potential Origin bolter Coen Hess.

The Cowboys view Scott as the ideal mentor for the young forwards coming through or entering their system over the final stages of his career.
