Greaney pastures for club

Councillor on board

- TONY RAGGATT

THE Cowboys Leagues Club has welcomed a Townsville councillor to its board as it reports a record profit and embarks on a further expansion of the club’s CBD facilities.

Cr Ann- Maree Greaney, the chairwoman of the council’s Community Health and Environment Committee, was elected to the club’s board after elections held this month.

Cr Greaney will take up her position on April 1, while an existing board member, Darren Gardiner, secured the other seat available under a vote by club members.

Cowboys Leagues Club chairman Daryl Holmes yesterday welcomed Cr Greaney to the board, saying she would be a valuable addition to the club.

“Ann- Maree has a wealth of experience in many different sectors, including at the NRL, the council, and in the community, and she will bring valuable knowledge and experience to her new role,” Mr Holmes said.

The club held its annual general meeting yesterday at which Mr Holmes set out the club’s expansion plans and reported on strong financial results.

Mr Holmes said the club was set to embark on the next stage of renovations to its CBD premises as part of a strategy to continually improve services and facilities to members.

“We are also looking to prepare for and capitalise on the proximity of the club to the new stadium,” Mr Holmes said. “We have made a stra- tegic investment in an adjoining building on Flinders St.

“We have gutted the inside of that building and intend to expand the club into it to create a first- class facility.”

Mr Holmes said the consolidated Cowboys group achieved a record profit of $ 1.98 million, buoyed by improved trade following the historic first NRL premiership win in 2015. They had also continued its strong support of community organisations.

“In 2016, our club contributed $ 775,000 to many very worthy community organisations, charitable groups, sporting organisations and schools,” Mr Holmes said.

“We were able to do so, and support the Cowboys Football Club, due to the strong financial result of the Cowboys group, which was ultimately enabled by the strong and loyal support of our members.”

Mr Holmes also congratulated staff for this week’s Clubs Queensland Awards where they secured top three finishes in six categories, including winning the Best Club Cafe/ Coffee Shop award.
