EXCITING WORLD OF THEATRE FOR KIDS BIG AND SMALL

-

FROM

themes of adventure, to invention and hilarity, the 2017 Theatre Season is well underway and is again delivering an enthralling and educational experience for young minds.

A wonderfully diverse range of productions have been programmed by Townsville City Council for the Children’s Theatre season this year, including Griffin Theatre’s performance of The Witches by Roald Dahl which is coming to Riverway Arts Centre on May 19.

The Witches tells the exciting story of a little boy who accidentally stumbles into the annual meeting of witches. Hearing their nasty plan to get rid of all the children in the world — by turning them into mice — the little boy must hatch a cunning plan to outwit the witches! Brave boys and girls aged 6 and above, rat- racers and retirees are in for a wickedly wonderful time.

Lucas Jervies directs this bubbling concoction, based on David Wood’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, with one actor running amok in an exciting, shape- shifting performance.

In September, Monkey Baa Theatre return to Riverway Arts Centre with their stage adaptation of Jackie French and Bruce Whatley’s beloved Diary of a Wombat. The show stars Mothball, the naughtiest wombat in Australia. Bored with her routine, Mothball goes in search of shelter and food, creating chaos in the lives of the humans around her as she goes. Monkey Baa uses the magic of puppetry and live music to bring this delightfully endearing story for ages 3 and over to the stage.

The Children’s Theatre season shows are designed to engage with thoughtprovoking performances and stimulating activities. Most performances in the program are accompanied by a comprehensive teacher resource pack, as well as featuring question and answer time and greater involvement with the cast, so that students gain an understanding of what, why and how things are done.

Along with the Children’s Theatre Season, Townsville City Council is also proud to present a range of other sensational performances suitable for children, including the North Queensland Festival of One Plays, Circa’s Landscape with Monsters, Melbourne City Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and a special Queensland Symphony Orchestra performance of Peter and the Wolf.
