BRITAIN’S newest fusion reactor has been fired up, taking the UK one step further towards generating electricity from the power of the stars. The heart of the Tokamak ST40 reactor in Oxfordshire — a super- hot cloud of electrically charged gas, or plasma — is expected to reach 100 million centigrade in 2018. That is how hot it needs to be to trigger fusion, the joining together of atomic nuclei accompanied by an enormous release of energy, the same process that enables stars to shine. The reactor is the latest step in a five- stage plan to bring fusion power to the national grid by 2030. NORTH Korea has appealed to South- East Asian countries for support in its row with the US to prevent what it warned could be a “nuclear holocaust”. In a letter to the Association of South- East Asian Nations, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong- ho warned the situation on the Korean Peninsula was “reaching the brink of war” because of Washington’s actions. Philippine President and ASEAN summit host Rodrigo Duterte called on the United States, China, Japan and South Korea to exercise patience in dealing with North Korea. “I would caution everybody,” he said. A PAIR of filmmakers at a TED Conference in Vancouver, Canada, have used virtual reality to allow people to experience the ravages of deforestation — from the perspective of a tree. Delegates buried a seed symbolically in soil before donning virtual reality head gear and a vest that vibrates. From there, they virtually become the seed, watch their roots grow, break through the forest floor and grow mature before hearing the sound of chainsaws and feeling the heat of a virtual fire devouring the forest. “People leave and tell their friends they were a tree,” a spokesman said. THE young Australian woman who died in Bali after police found her lying next to a crashed scooter is being remembered by family and friends as a beautiful “ray of sunshine”.

Ella Knights died on Thursday, a week after she posted a video to Instagram of herself on the back of a scooter driven by a friend with the caption “sorry mum # nohelmet”.

The 26- year- old was found by a passer- by lying face down in a gutter in Canggu, North Kuta about 3am on Thursday.

A Honda scooter was lying on its side a few metres away with its engine still running.

Witnesses reported Ms Knights had been riding the bike alone and was not wearing a helmet.

The Sydney resident had spent the previous 10 weeks travelling the world and was due to fly home on May 1.

She had documented her travels through India and Indonesia on social media and met up with a number of friends and relatives, including her mother, Kaz Knights.

The young Australian also recently graduated from a 200- hour yoga teacher course in Goa.

“@ ellaknights love you, miss you already my little ray of sunshine,” friend @ littlegreenthumb posted on Instagram.

The pair were pictured in a Bali pool together on Ms Knight’s Instagram account earlier this week.
