Young Toads to man up

- MICHAEL THOMPSON michael. thompson@ news. com. au

THE Burdekin Canetoads are counting on youthful enthusiasm to get them through what is expected to be another tough tussle against Brothers in Ayr this evening.

Burdekin will be without a handful of experienced players because of work and personal commitments, but coach Brendan Bunyan says all is not lost for the Canetoads.

In fact, he is confident some new blood could give Burdekin the edge they need to beat a Brothers team known for an efficient brand of rugby.

The Brethren and Burdekin last clashed in Ayr earlier this month, and it was in fact the last club game either team played before the Easter and representative round byes.

The recent withdrawal of Western Suburbs from the A grade Townsville and Districts Rugby Union competition has forced organisers into a league reshuffle, resulting in Brothers and Burdekin meeting in Ayr for the second time this month.

An inspired defensive effort saw Brothers win the first game 24- 5.

“We have a few new guys coming into the team and they’re getting an opportunity to prove their worth,” Bunyan said.

“I’m sure they’ll bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and even though we’ll be missing a few experienced blokes, that enthusiasm could really help us.

“If you use it right you can get the result.”

Burdekin sit fifth on the TDRU ladder after five rounds with a 2- 2 win- loss record, while Brothers are second after winning three of their four games played. The Canetoads and Brethren have enjoyed a healthy rivalry in recent years and met in grand finals.

“The last time we played Brothers we just made too many mistakes,” Bunyan said.

“Brothers play mistake- free footy and they play it in the right spirit, so while it’s always a tough game we really enjoy it.

“I guess it’s one of those love- hate relationships, because Brothers get the most out of you.”

Ross River’s season gained traction recently, thanks to a close win over newcomers Charters Towers, propelling the Redskins to third, and they will be aiming to string two wins together when they host North Ward at Bindal Sports Ground this afternoon.

Charters Towers take on undefeated competition leaders Teachers Wests in today’s other game at Mike Carney Toyota Park. Today: 4pm Ross River v North Ward, Bindal Sports Ground; 4.40pm Charters Towers v Teachers West, Mike Carney Toyota Park; 6pm Burdekin v Brothers, Casalegno Field ( Ayr).
